Cycling and mountain biking

Villa de Mazo is an ideal destination for both mountain biking and road cycling.

Sports competitions in both disciplines are held every year.

Mazubike is a mountain biking event organized by Dinámica Eventos with the collaboration of the Villa de Mazo Town Council. It is held in the month of June and is located in the municipality of Villa de Mazo.

The main event takes place on a route of approximately 40 km, of medium technical difficulty, combining tracks and trails in a natural environment. The start, finish, and collection of bib numbers are concentrated in the town of Villa de Mazo.

The event encourages both amateur and competitive participation, promotes respect for the natural environment, and contributes to boosting local sports and tourism activity.

The Villa de Mazo Town Council, together with the Flow Trails La Palma Sports Club, also organizes the DH Villa de Mazo in June, a mountain biking competition in the San Blas ravine. Riders take on a descent where they put their skills to the test, combining speed and technique.

Criterium Lodero is a road cycling event organized by Dinámica Eventos, with the support of the Canary Islands Cycling Federation and the Villa de Mazo Town Council. It takes place in the month of February on a closed circuit in the neighborhood of Lodero, adapted to the criterium format.

The route is located on the LP-2052, with the start and finish in the neighborhood itself, and is structured in different heats according to categories, from schools to adult participants. Registration is managed in advance and includes a federated license or one-day insurance for non-federated participants.

The event combines competitiveness and formative participation, promoting sports habits and the recovery of road circuits in the municipality. The Lodero environment becomes a meeting point for athletes, families, and spectators, contributing to boosting the sports and social activity of Villa de Mazo.

MTB Routes

The routes are basically distributed through a single starting point, El Refugio del Pilar. Many of the routes can be combined with each other, giving the user the possibility of configuring other routes of different lengths, difficulties, and gradients to their liking.

ROUTE 1 PISTA EL PILAR – LA SALEMERA
Route with steep slopes that crosses all the vegetation levels of the eastern slope, from the humid pine forest to the arid coast. It shares the beginning with Route 4 and descends among fruit trees towards Roque Niquiomo, a volcanic dome next to the Sima del Niquiomo. It continues south along a forest track and then accompanies the San Simón Ravine. The landscape opens up in La Sabina and passes through the Cruz of the same name to Malpaíses. After crossing the LP 2, young lavas covered with tabaibas, spurges, and sorrels appear. It ends in La Salemera, next to bars, restaurants, and a pebble beach.

ROUTE 3 PISTA OESTE – LLANO DEL CABRITO
It is the most extensive, surrounding the Cumbre Vieja mountain range crossing the Natural Park. It runs through six historical eruptions and multiple volcanic landscapes. It starts from the LP 301 towards the Tacande cone and the Pista del Oeste, with views of the Llano del Banco and the Hoyo de la Sima. It crosses lava fields from 1712 and borders the Montaña de los Arreboles near Los Canarios. It allows detours to the Fuente del Tión or the Recreational Area of the Fuente de los Roques. It passes through the Malpaís de Flores (1646) and the lavas of El Duraznero (1949). It returns to the Refugio del Pilar linking with the PR LP 17 and SL VM 124 trails.

ROUTE 4 PISTA DEL LLANO DE LA MOSCA
Unique circular route from the Refugio del Pilar, without repeating sections, always in a pine forest environment. It surrounds ancient volcanic cones such as Birigoyo, Montaña de la Barquita, and Montaña del Caldero, offering sporadic views of their summits. It runs through repopulated pine forests with an undergrowth of fayas and heaths. The high density of trees reflects human intervention, although with native species. Some isolated specimens of radiata pine introduced in the 50s are preserved.
