PR LP 16.1
from PR LP 16 to La Salemera
PR LP 16.1 is the southern branch of the PR LP 16 trail, which connects the El Pilar Refuge with El Pueblo de Mazo. For most of its route, it runs parallel to the Las Cuevas Ravine, in one of whose headwaters is the Belmaco Archaeological Park. And it concludes in the most popular of the municipality’s bathing areas, next to a vanguard-design lighthouse.
The access fork starts at kilometer 8 of the main route, as we leave behind the characteristic silhouette of Roque Niquiomo. It is a classic area for the faya-heath forest, which until a few decades ago was intensely cut down in these same places. After the Montaña de Vinijobre, which we surround on the southern flank, the channel of the Barranco begins to become visible. The retreat of the potential vegetation, which gives way to a much more humanized area, is already evident.
The main road awaits us in the La Sabina neighborhood. It is possible to conclude the route at this same point, since from here it is easy to connect with the public transport network. However, its official route still extends for a distance equivalent to the one we have walked, with the final incentive of our encounter with the sea. Sticking to the coast, the silhouette of the Montaña del Azufre stands out, around which a protected area of 75 hectares has been traced. Sharpening our view, we can distinguish the route of the lavas from the Volcán de San Juan, which reached the eastern coast in this same area.
